Advice For On the Beach

Beach And Watersports Safety
There is no flag or lifeguard system operated or beaches here in Skiathos. Therefore it is very important that you exercise extreme caution at all times when swimming or participating in water sports on or in the sea. Please take note of warning signs you may see posted on the beach. Many of the hazards in the sea cannot easily be seen or predicted, so it is important to behave responsibly both for your own safety and that of others whilst bathing in the sea. Please also remember that the small jetties leading into the sea might be in shallow water, so do not dive from these.

Some watersports can be hazardous if equipment is not properly maintained or the activity is not properly supervised. Always look for reputable watersports centre and ensure that you are covered by insurance for the activity concerned. Do not assume that your holiday policy covers you. Some activities classed by insurers as hazardous are excluded, and you should therefore be aware of what these are.

Jelly Fish And Sea Urchins
Occasionally when the sea blows, it can bring Jellyfish. Some are harmless but others can give a nasty sting. A sting can range from the emergence of raised welts to a mere nettle rash. An antidote can be bought from the local pharmacist (chemist).

When swimming near rocks, please be careful where you put your feet. Once you step on a Sea Urchin you will soon know! The prickles are very sharp. Do not try to remove the needles, see a pharmacist and they will advise you of what to do.
