The following might help quell your confusion and whet your appetite.

Horiatiki - Greek Salad
Almost a meal in itself. It consists of tomatoes, cucumber, green peppers, feta, onions and olives. Usually served with and oil and vinegar dressing and a sprinkling of oregano.

Taramasalata - Fish Roe Dip
This is pale pink in colour and is a mixture of fish roe, mashed potato, breadcrumbs and lemon. It is usually eaten as a dip with fresh crusty bread.

Tzatziki
This is a truly mouth watering concoction which is deservedly extremely popular throughout Greece. It is made of yoghurt, grated cucumber, lashings of garlic and a little olive oil.

Melitzanosalata - Aubergine Dip
Aubergines baked, mashed and mixed with mayonnaise and garlic.

Saganaki - Fried Cheese
A wonderful starter. The cheese can either be oven baked or deep-fried and is coated in a light batter. Delicious with a little lemon juice.

Kolokythakia - Courgettes
This is a popular dish and is made with courgettes that are fried in a light batter. The dish is often presented with a smattering of Tzatziki or garlic dip.

Gigantes - Giant Beans
Broad beans oven baked in tomato sauce - delicious!

Dolmadakia - Stuffed Baby Vine Leaves
Vine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs.
