Ancient Athens
Did you know that we are only 2 miles away from the main land of Greece? It would be such a shame to be so close and not visit The Greek Ancient capital of Athens. This tour gives you an opportunity to observe the striking contrasts that make Athens such a fascinating city. Our expert guides take you to see the most important aspects of the city center.
The tour includes Constitution Square (Syntagma), the House of Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, and the National Library. Driving down Herod Atticus Street, you will see the Evzones in their picturesque uniforms and the Presidential Palace. On your way to the Acropolis, you will view Hadrian's Arch, visit the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and make a short stop at the Panathinaiko Stadium, where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in 1896.
The visit to the Acropolis includes some of the most magnificent architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age, including the Propylaea, the basis of the Temple of Athena Nike (since the temple itself has been disassembled and is being restored), the Erechtheion, and finally, the Parthenon, a true synthesis of the harmony between material and spirit. Please have your cameras ready for the most fantastic photograph of the panoramic view of Athens.
Meteora
One of the most amazing places in Greece, if not the world is Meteora. If you have seen pictures of Greece then you have certainly been impressed by the monasteries perched on top of enormous rocks and have probably wondered how on earth they built them. The rocks themselves are impressive, rising from the plains of Thessaly. In fact the producers of James Bond found them so impressive that they had Roger Moore (or his stunt double) climb the stone face of one in the movie "For Your Eyes Only".
The word Meteora means literally 'hovering in the air'. What created this rare geological phenomenon is one of the mysteries of nature and there are many theories though they remain theories and none have been proven. But as amazing a marvel of nature as these giant rocks are the buildings on the top of these are a marvel of man and seem just as miraculous and make Meteora one of the most spectacular places to visit in Greece.
The area of Meteora, was originally settled by monks who lived in caves within the rocks during the 11th Century. They were then joined by the first Monastic community who by the 16th century had built over 20 monasteries. Now a days there are only 6 monasteries and we visit two of these on our day out. Our expert guide takes you through the monasteries telling you about the history, religion and the architecture, these monasteries not only provide incredible views, they are full of religious treasures, wall paintings, icons and libraries rich in old manuscripts. Before returning back to Skiathos we visit the town of Kalambaki, which is nestling at the foot of the rocks. The name Kalambaka comes from the Turkish word Kalembaki which means beautiful fortress. The town itself was destroyed by the Germans in World War Two so it is pretty modern. You have enough time for lunch.
I am sure when you return you will agree with us that Meteora really should be the 8th wonder of the world - A great photo opportunity.
